What is a Septic System?

It is a small scale sewage treatment system common in areas where there is no connection to main sewage drains. A typical septic system consists of a tank that is designed to hold the waste. The hard materials (sludge) drops to the bottom, while the liquids are in the center and the scum on the top. The liquid in the center is what flows out of the outlet tee into a distribution area that allows the liquid waste to drain evenly into the field lines. The leach field is made up of perforated pipes and sand/stone that acts like a filter. The liquid will be filtered by the sand/stone to ensure purification as it goes into the ground water.

Why is it important to maintain it regularly?

Remember that a septic system is a large filter. All filtration systems require routine maintenance. Systems that are not maintained eventually fail. The sludge builds up and can enter the leach field which will clog perforated pipes and will not allow the liquids to pass through for it’s purification process. Backups are imminent. The replacement cost of a failed septic system can run as high as $25,000.00 + .
